Chief Adviser (CA) Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed Monday said, the construction work of Padma Bridge would begin in 2009 on completion of its ongoing preparatory works to establish a direct road-link between the south-western region and other parts of the country, reports UNB from Munshiganj.

He said this while formally opening to traffic the Sixth Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge (Mukterpur Bridge), constructed over the Dhaleshwari at Muktarpur in Munshiganj.

The opening of the bridge has brought the district closer to the capital through establishing a direct road communication, a long-cherished demand of the people of Munshiganj.

Dr Fakhruddin told the function that instruction has been given to the authorities concerned to immediately construct an alternative road from Muktarpur to Chashara of Narayanganj to make communication between Dhaka and Munshiganj smoother.

He said this region, including Dhaka, Munshiganj and Narayanganj, would have a coordinated transport system, if the alternative road were constructed.

The CA said the present government is giving topmost priority to expand and develop the country’s communication system to achieve rapid economic progress.
