Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee has been remanded for the fifth time in a case related to the attempted murder of writer Humayun Azad.

Judge SKM Tofael Hassan of the Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court granted the remand of four more days on Monday following a police request for seven days.

Earlier, police questioned Sayedee in remand for eight days in four phases.

His lawyer Abdur Razzak in the hearing claimed that he [Sayedee] was being remanded again and again only for harassment and that the High Court’s order was not being followed in handling his case.

Special public prosecutor MA Kamrul Hasan Khan Aslam said that further remand was needed to determine who attempted to murder Humayun Azad.

He reiterated that Sayedee divulged important information during his first-round remand in the case. “He should be interrogated again in presence of JMB chief Saidur Rahman and JMB organising chief Bhagne Shahid.”

The same court also sent banned fundamentalist outfit JMB’s Anwar Alam Khokan alias Nazmul, popularly known as Bhagne Shahid, into remand in the same case.

The petition mentioned that Sayedee had delivered provocative speeches in and outside the parliament after Azad’s novel ‘Pak Sar Zamin Sar Baad’ had been published in the Eid issue of Bangla newspaper Daily Ittefaq on Nov 20, 2003.

A few days after Sayedee’s speeches, some unidentified assailants tried to kill Azad in front of the Bangla Academy on Feb 27, 2004 on his way home from the Ekushey Book Fair.

The writer was severely injured in the attack.

While undergoing treatment, Azad told reporters that Sayedee might have hands behind the attack. The writer later died in Germany on Aug 11, 2004.

The investigating officer said Shaykh Abdur Rahman and other high-ranking leaders of JMB were also involved in the attack on him.

On Nov 14, 2007, when the BNP-Jamaat government was in power, two charge sheets were submitted against Abdur Rahman, Ataur Rahman Sunny, Mizanur Rahman Minhaz and Anwar Alam alias Anwar Hossain Khoka in the case.

Later on Oct 20 last year, Azad’s brother Manjur Kabir claimed that the real culprits behind the murder were excluded from the charge sheet and pleaded for further investigation.

Earlier, a court granted the CID 2 days to quiz JMB member Hafej Mahmud alias Rakib Hasan in the case.
