The High Court on Monday granted BNP standing committee member Rafiqul Islam Mia and vice chairman Shah Moazzem interim bail in nine cases related to threatening prime minister Sheikh Hasina with dire consequences.

The court ordered that the bail will be effective until the charge-framing in eight cases and submission of police report in one case are done.

Moreover, the bench of justices Syed Mohammad Dastgir Hossain and A K M Zahirul Haque also asked the government to explain why the duo would not be given permanent bail.

The cases were filed in Bogra, Bhola, Panchagarh, Dhaka, Munshiganj, Narail, Kushtia, Chittagong and Sirajganj.

According to the case details, the accused, Rafiqul and Moazzem, made inflammatory speeches including making death threats to the prime minister at an opposition rally at Muktangan on July 25.

They reportedly said that Hasina, also the Awami League president, would face the same fate as her father.

“Your father had passed away according to Allah’s order as he imposed one-party rule. You should ponder over your father’s fate,” Rafiqul said at the meeting, indirectly referring to Hasina.

BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain and standing committee member Moudud Ahmed were also present at the meeting.
