Chief of Jama’tul Mujahideen Bangladesh Anwar Alam, alias Anwar Hossain Khoka alias ‘Bhagne Shahid’ has given a statement in connection with JMB’s involvement in the attempted murder of writer Humayun Azad.

The investigation officer in the case Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman said on Wednesday that, “[Bhagne Shahid] gave statement at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday noon under Section 164 relating himself with the attempt.”

He however did not say what statement he gave.

Bhagne Shahid was later sent to jail.

The JMB chief was taken to the court after spending eight days in police custody in two phases.

The CID inspector said he was taken to face Jamaat-e-Islami executive council leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee and JMB’s acting chief Saidur Rahman during his second remand.

Azad was attacked on Feb 27, 2004, with sharp weapons in front of the Bangla Academy, while he was returning home from the Ekushey Book Fair, leaving him seriously injured.

While undergoing treatment, Azad had alleged to reporters that Sayedee may have had a hand in the attack.

The pre-eminent writer later died in Munich in Germany on Aug 11, 2004.

According to the case, Azad’s ‘Pak Sar Zamin Sar Baad’ was published in the Eid Issue of the Bangla newspaper Daily Ittefaq on Nov 20, 2003. After which, it was claimed, Sayedee had delivered instigating speeches against Azad in the parliament, and given several sermons on different occasions across the country. The Jamaat leader had also suggested the formulation of a blasphemy law to deal with people like Azad.

On Nov 14, 2007 when the BNP-led government was in power, two charge sheets were submitted making JMB leaders Abdur Rahman, Ataur Rahman Sunny, Mizanur Rahman Minhaz and Anwar Alam alias Anwar Hossain Khoka as the chief defendants.

Later on Oct 20 last year, Azad’s brother Manjur Kabir claimed the real culprits behind the murder were not included in the charge sheet and applied for a new investigation into the case, which was granted.
