Now a state minister has joined a human chain formed in favour of the proposed Bangabandhu airport and a housing projects in Munshiganj, weeks after locals strongly protested the move.

State minister for housing and public works Abdul Mannan Khan took part in the human chain, stretched around 20 km. Pro-government locals organised it on Dhaka-Mawa highway at Srinagar from 10am to 1pm on Tuesday.

Khan also attended a rally arranged by the locals. Whip Shagufta Yasmin Amili and ruling party MP Sukumar Ranjan Ghosh were also present. Amili said the spontaneous participation of the people in the programme proved that the locals welcomed the construction.

The ruling party supporters said establishment of the airport would improve the lifestyles of the locals through employment.

On Dec 27, some 30,000 people of Srinagar Upazila formed a human chain on the highway demanding shifting of the airport and proposed ‘Bangabandhu City’ from the area. Locals of Nawabganj and Dohar held similar agitation programmes before that.

The government is planning to build an airport and a housing estate in three upazilas—Srinagar, Nawabganj, Dohar—acquiring some 25,000 acres of land.

Once implemented, the locals claimed, the airport project would leave millions of people jobless as they would lose their arable land.
