Woman arrested in Dhaka over
Police have arrested a woman in Dhaka over abduction of a Bangladeshi youth in South Africa’s Johannesburg. Police said they caught ‘Aleya’, 28, on Thursday when she tried to withdraw the money deposited in an account of a Bangladeshi bank in ransom for release of the captive, ‘Nafiz’.

Criminal Investigation Department’s Special Superintendent of Police Mirza Abdullahil Baki told reporters on Friday Nafiz, who has been living in Johannesburg for nine years, was abducted on Jun 2.

Later, the captors called Nafiz’s sister ‘Tania’, who also lives in Johannesburg with her husband, and demanded Tk 700,000 in ransom for his release.

They identified themselves as members of a Mafia gang.

Tania discussed the abduction with her mother, living at Gazaria in Munshiganj, who informed CID of the matter.

As instructed by the abductors, Nafiz’s mother deposited the money in a bank account.

The bank stopped online transaction at the instruction of CID, requiring the agent of the abductors to go to the bank branch for withdrawing the money.

Baki said police caught Aleya when she tried to withdraw the money from the bank branch at Old Dhaka.

The arrestee claimed her husband Tajul Islam had sent the money from South Africa for land purchase.

According to the CID official, when they contacted Islam by telephone, he said a Bangladeshi, ‘Mohsin’, had given him the money for business.

He pleaded ignorance of the abduction.

Baki said Nafiz had called her mother from the captivity on Thursday night and requested her to arrange release of Aleya.

He said police had informed the foreign ministry of the incident.
