The High Court on Monday summoned two councillors of Dhaka South City Corporation (DCC) to appear before it in connection with the construction of their offices on land meant for the Dholai canal in the city’s Jatrabari area.

An HC bench comprising Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice M Iqbal Kabir passed the order following a writ petition by advocate Munzil Morshed in public interest.

The bench also asked the two councillors – ward No-50’s Kazi Habibur Rahman and ward-51’s Delwar Hossain – to appear before the court on November 1 to explain the construction of the offices on the land of Deb Dholai canal.

The court also ordered assistant commissioner (AC) land of Tongbari in Munshiganj to appear before it on the same day to explain the capture of the canal.

The HC also issued upon a rule on the authorities concerned of the government to explain why any necessary steps will not be taken against the canal grabbers.

The court also asked environment secretary, environment department Directorate General (DG), Rajuk chairman, Dhaka deputy commissioner, Munshiganj deputy commissioner and police super, and Jatrabari police station officer-in-charge to respond to the rule within four weeks.

The administration was asked to submit a progress report within two weeks over their activities to stop encroachment on the canal.

Adv Manzill Murshid on behalf of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh filed the writ with the HC on Sunday following a report recently published by a newspaper in this regard.
