The High Court has asked why eight persons detained without trial for more than a decade should not be granted bail.

The bench of Justices AKM Abdul Hakim and SM Mojibur Rahman issued the rule on Tuesday and ordered the case documents be submitted before the court.

The bench ordered the concerned district magistrates to respond to the rule within 15 days.

Supreme Court Legal Aid Panel Lawyer Chanchal Kumar Biswas brought the matter of the long detentions without trial of the inmates at the Sylhet, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Kishoreganj, Narsingdi and Munshiganj jails to the High Court’s notice on Monday.

“The court issued a rule after a preliminary hearing after I brought the issue to their attention yesterday (Monday),” he told bdnews24.com. “The HC has ordered prison authorities to bring the inmates before them, but has not specified a date or time as yet. It may do so soon.”
