ON February 21, 1952 the valiant soldiers of the language movement shed their blood for the recognition of our mother tongue Bangla. Prior to that, in 1948 Nayeemuddin protested against the utterance of MA Jinnah who said in a meeting at Curzon Hall “Urdu, only Urdu shall be the state language of Pakistan”. Nayeemuddin was not a leader or worker of any party, he protested on behalf of general mass and general students.

THE nation is going to observe the death anniversary of the doyen on October 13 with a heavy heart. Obaidul Huq was born on October 31, 1911, in Feni district. It’s a miracle that he was born in October and died in October.

When, on October 14, 2007, we were celebrating Eid, we heard that the doyen, the legend, the savant, the celebrity, Obaidul Huq, had breathed his last the day before. The news came to us as a bolt from the blue.

On this day 119 years ago, the workers of the Hay Market of Chicago City, USA sacrificed their lives for ensuring eight hour working day for them. Since then, the day is observed all over the world as the day of solidarity with working people.
